How To Make A Router Table Fence – My new router table is now complete and to be honest I am not surprised at how well the whole setup is working. The router lift, extension table, dust collection and fence work as I expected. However, I don’t mean this in any haughty or arrogant way. I took everything I learned from all my previous router table setups to design a very simple and easy to build router table that includes everything I liked about the previous setups and added the features I wanted. If you haven’t seen my quick release router lifter or my desk router desk extension wing, you might want to take a look first. The last piece of the puzzle was the router table fence.
I have plans available for those interested in this complete router table setup. Mine was about $50 for materials and I got a 2HP Drill Master Router from Harbor Freight for $39.75 plus tax (with the usual 25% off coupon). Router table, router lift and router around $100-$110. I will kindly consider this budget.
How To Make A Router Table Fence
As with my extension wing, I already roughened the pieces according to the plywood placement scheme in the plan. So I had to cut a few pieces to final size before assembling.

The fence is adjusted and held in place by means of two slots and a retaining button. The process is really simple. First, mark the center of each end of the slot.
And drill those centers with the correct size drill. I stacked both the left and right pieces to save time on drilling.
Finally, the puzzle referring to the speed square creates slots by connecting the sides of the holes.

The rest of the pieces were cut to meter lengths on a saw. I had some questions on my extendable wing video about the fence setup I use with my wing and first got the idea from John Peters on YouTube. It is simply two pieces of scrap metal joined together to form an L shape. Then some cheap spring clips hold my miter saw to the fence. A shallow notch is created on the sacrificial surface, giving you a clear view of exactly where the blade is. I use this setting whenever I can because I like the precision of the cut.
Since all the pieces are cut out, assembly is very easy. It’s nothing but butt, glue and breasts. Slot trays get a riser block on the inside and then the front panels are attached to the back first.
The case has a split base construction as there is a dust collection port at the bottom of the router box. If you’re building a dust collector version of the ShopVac, the base is one continuous piece. To make sure the fronts stay perfectly flat, they are glued to the straightest surface in my shop, which is my table saw.

The top cap can then be glued and nailed. I let it sit for about an hour to let the glue set before removing the front clips.
Most router fence setups have a split fence that is adjusted with sled bolts and slots. I wanted to use the split fence feature but didn’t want to use a slot and sled bolts.
For every router fence setup I’ve used, I’ve set the fence levels once and never adjusted them since. To make it easier, I drilled two holes and put screws in the back to hold it in place. If I ever need to adjust it for some reason, I can remove the screws, move the fronts, and reattach with the screws.
Kreg Precision Router Table Fence
You can get great with homemade buttons or even buy them if you want. However, a simple rectangle with a hole in the middle will do the job just fine. (Admittedly, I cut some fancy buttons after CNC building them.)
When I finished making picnic tables to sell, I had an extra 5/16-18 carriage bolt in my hardware collection. Therefore, I try to use it in my projects whenever possible. A 5/16″ carriage bolt threaded into a 1/4″ hole makes an ideal knob. Once the bolt is halfway through the sheet, some locknuts can be used to turn the carriage bolt.
After the fence is assembled, it can be placed in the front position to drill the T-nut holes on the back of the slots.
Aluminum Router Fence Build
After everything is built and installed, some tests confirm that everything is working as it should. I made a total of eight nine inch bypasses on some scrap metal I salvaged from the junkyard. The tip used was a 1/2″ round overbite. Dust collection is impeccable on this setup.
The cause of dust collection is related to the unimpeded movement of the router bit in the dust collection air stream. The inner plate has a notch at the back. A similar insert plate can easily be made with a large opening on the left side of the blade to collect dust during dado operations.

How To Install The Jessem Mast R Fence On Your Router Table
This route lifter is activated for fast movement and still allows for precise positioning. The included stop block allows you to easily drop bits and quickly return to your position if necessary. Plans include a router lift and housing, a 27″ x 20″ sheet to be used as an extension wing for the table saw, and an adjustable fence. Each piece in this plan is color coded to indicate its location. I find this approach easier to follow because you can visually see the layout or reference drawings and know where that particular part will end up in final assembly. There are two versions of the building in the plan. One is designed for use with a 4 inch dust collection hose from below and the other with a Shopvac hose attached to the fence. The lifter extends 15-3/4” below the surface of the table. This plan fits a standard 3-1/2″ diameter router. Depending on where you get the hardware, the estimated build cost is around $50.
