I’ve made a few large tables before, but nothing of this size. I had to estimate the weight of the tabletop to see how heavy it would be in our shop. At 2 inches thick, it was already close to 900 pounds, which would have prevented my son and I from hitting the edge of the table (safely). So… I designed the breadboard so that the outer edges and ends are over 2 inches thick and most of the center is only 1.25 inches thick. The tip itself weighs approx. 600 pounds, which is not easy to manage.

I found a company in Maine that specializes in making very large table bases. While the floor may not be perfectly level (and it looks better), I like to use only two (not three) stands.

After I made the outer edge 2.25 inches thick and the inner edge 1.25 inches, we lined it all up and dried to see what we had.
Bedboards are boards that cover each side of a long table top. They run at 90 degrees to all other boards to hide the end grain and keep the surface flat. They are tongue attached (the left side is glued to the long planks) and a slot is cut in the breadboard to insert the tab….and they are held in place with pegs. Attach the stand to the bottom of the table with half of the wood thread (place it on the bottom of the table top) and half of the machine thread (for screws and washers) to go through the holes in the stand support. We found the best foot position by placing it on top until the tip is completely flat (between a quarter and a third of each tip).

Now we were ready for the completion process. Choose the vintage look from our designs. The table top and legs were drilled, sanded and burnished … before being painted and polished.
It was very difficult to find a finished table in their house that showed the entire table and what the final color would be…so here are a couple of pictures.

I wonder how high above the floor the long floor will be. How is it properly attached to the legs? It seems to decrease from time to time. It was suggested that I build a 10-12 ft x 42″-48″ table for my fireplace, but they didn’t want the raised bed to go through. So I’ve been thinking about it all the time since then. The post is exactly 2.25″ X 4″ X 7″ long and solid red oak. The post is slightly thicker and goes into the sides of the stand 3.5″. If you have wide planks, then you can still make this table. Size without keeping the right distance from each edge of the bag/hardwood.
