How To Make A Cheap Coffee Table – Yes! Another coffee table. i know. Obviously, we can’t decide on this important piece of living room furniture.

If you are new to this blog, you may not know that I built a new coffee table back in May (with a nice epoxy top coat). So what would allow us to change it so quickly? Well, two things. First, it was hit very hard a few times, which made the legs a little stronger. Also, we have a new sofa. And it’s gray (our last board was greenish yellow). So a gray coffee table just doesn’t seem right, and apparently I can’t get enough of it.

Making a coffee table out of several cut 2×4 boards was a very easy project. After purchasing the supplies, the building part only takes a few hours (less if you already cut your boards to size) and then the sealing takes time to dry. Easy!

First, cut your 2×4 boards to the dimensions listed above. Place the shelves as they will be for the final look and mark where the legs will go to allow for space.

Note. If you want to take power tools out of the equation entirely, I bet this project could be finished easily if you just cut all the pieces of wood to 55 inches and just glued the wood all over. We wanted our feet to be inside the table and we wanted it to be a little smaller, so we went with a very hollow center. Anyway, just throwing it out there.

Second, the top layer of boards (consisting of five 55x2x4 boards). Remember, this will be the top of your coffee table, so choose the best sides. We adjust every other board by 2.5 inches to get this stack of 2x4s.

The only tricky part of this chart is finding the best method to hold the boards horizontally. We decided to use some cross beams and cover them with a second row of 2x4s. So, place your second row of 55x2x4s on both edges (make sure to overlap by 2.5 inches). Get your 13.5x2x4 dimensions and use them as a guide to figure out where to place the cutouts. Go ahead and place your smaller 8.5x2x4s on the vertical edges of this row to make sure they fit.

Mark the edges on the second row of your 55x2x4 so you know where to cut and give yourself extra room. However, this part will be completely hidden. We cut the notches with our circular saw, but it can be done with a jigsaw or even a hand + miter saw. A quick Google search can show you the best painting techniques based on the tools you have. Again, it will be completely hidden, so it’s not a big deal if it’s a little/too low. After cutting, drill your second row and cross bars into place.

Then, layer by layer, screw all the boards into place. This is where you can add a curved, trapezoidal look to the edge if you want. As I said, our size is 2.5 inches. Once all the boards are in place, screw the legs in as well.

Finally, you want to give the entire surface and edges a good sanding. 2x4s aren’t always the easiest. Then seal with several layers of semi-gloss polyurethane. We chose not to stain the wood because we wanted to keep the light and raw color of the wood. But if you want to seal the stains before you seal them, go for it. I will not stop you. It all depends on how your place will look.
