How To Make A Lounge Chair – Lounge chairs can seem like a daunting project, but if you have the right plans, they’re no more difficult to build than a chair or bench—all you need to do is measure and cut more. These DIY armchair plans will guide you step by step in making your own armchair.
Since these chairs will be used outside, I recommend using a good weathered wood like cedar (or teak if you want to really go high). Although pine is still good to use if you paint or seal it well.
How To Make A Lounge Chair
The first step is to create a simple box for the outer frame of the lounge chair. Use wood glue and either pocket screws on the inside or finish nails/screws on the outside.

Once you’ve assembled the outer frame, it’s time to assemble the inner frame, which forms the base for the lower seat slats and upper back slats. All of these pieces are offset from the top of the outer frame by 3/4 inch (by the thickness of the slats) so that the slats are flush with the outer frame.
I prefer to dry-fit the inner frame first to make sure all the pieces fit properly to the outer frame, but then assemble the inner frame separately before attaching it to the outer frame. This method allows you to nail/screw the 26″ boards to the 44 1/2″ boards from the outside instead of using pocket screws or trying to nail them together.
This step is pretty straightforward. Starting 1/4 inch from the footboard of the outer frame, attach the 1×3 battens to the inner frame. You don’t need to use wood glue here as gravity should hold them in place – especially if you attach nails or screws to each of the four support plates.

Now that you’ve assembled the fixed parts, it’s time to move on to the moving parts. Start by cutting four pieces of 1 x 4 to 34 1/2″, then cut a 3 1/2″ radius arc in one end so that the back can be turned in and out of the frame.
You will now attach thirteen 1×3-inch slats to the back of the seat. Start at the lowest slat, making sure the edge is flush with the bottom edge of the backrest. Note. On this first slat, you need to round the bottom edge so that the back side can move up freely. Continue attaching the remaining twelve slats with screws or nails in the same manner as the bottom slats, spaced 1/4 inch apart.
After attaching the slats, it’s time to attach the two 1x4x2″ spacers to the outer seat back pieces. This should offset about 1/4″ from the bottom edge of the back.

The last thing you want to do when building this part is drill holes for the 3/8″ carriage bolts. There are two holes through the spacer block (one on each side). The center of these holes should be 1 inch on each side and 1/3 inch below the bottom of the flap. These holes are where the sled bolt attaches to the seat back, so it’s important that they are positioned correctly.
The other two holes are for the support arm support bolts. They should be 15 3/4 inches from the nearest edge of the support blocks and 1 3/4 inches from the edge of the slab.
Now that the backrest is ready, it’s time to assemble and attach the support arm, which allows you to adjust the angle of the backrest. To do this, you need to drill a hole in each end of a 1 x 2 x 19 1/2-inch board. In one end, you drill a 3/4-inch diameter hole for the dowel. This hole should be 3/4 inch from each edge of the board. The hole at the other end of the board is for a 3/8″ stretcher and should also be 3/4″ from each end.

After drilling the holes, attach the brackets to the inside of the outer backrest support plate with 2-inch carriage bolts and drive a 3/4-inch dowel into each end with an even overhang.
Attach the back to the inner frame. Mark the holes for the 3/8″ carriage bolts on the outer frame, drill the holes and use the 3″ bolts to attach.
Install a 24-inch 1×2 plate under the top inner frame plate so that it is 2 1/4 inches below the top edge of the outer frame. Then add 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 3/4″ blocks every 1 1/2″ starting 1 1/2″ inside the top frame board as shown in the image below. A good tip is to use another 26″ long 1×2 as a spacer, sandwiched between the two 24″ boards to make sure both sides line up exactly.

You’re almost done! Now we just need to cut and attach the legs. Of course, you could also use regular 4×4 square legs, but you’ve done so much work with your DIY chaise longue. Why not take the time to cut a taper on each side of the legs to give them a bit. Add? Style? The images below show the placement of these cones.
Once the legs are cut, you can stick wood glue on the outside and nails/screws or pocket screws on the inside.
If you’ve chosen a good weather-resistant wood such as cedar or teak, simply oiling the finished chair gives a beautiful finish that requires little maintenance each year (soap and water with a ScotchBrite pad and re-oiling is recommended). If you used pine or something similar, you’ll need to stain and seal or paint your chair (including the bottom of the legs) to better withstand the elements.
