Depending on how much time you want to spend or how much money you want to save, some of these tools can be omitted or replaced in one way or another. So don’t think you have to have everything on this list to make a resin table. I will say, they make it easy.

I always start my project by creating a template to help me visualize the finished table. Your template doesn’t have to be anything fancy. I usually use some old 1×1″ scrap I have lying around. For the best visualization, make the template so that the inside of the template is the size of your finished table.

Once you have a template, take the time to choose a layout. Even if you think you know exactly how you want it oriented, take a few minutes to play around with other ideas by moving the panels, rotating the panels, or adding more parts to see how it will look. You might be surprised. I have no shame and I do it in my record supplier showroom. The first time I did it with a few funny looks, but now they are used to me.

I have one main rule for choosing a great look. No straight edges. Why? Because trees don’t grow with perfectly straight edges and rivers don’t flow perfectly straight. When we build one of these tables, we try to imitate nature as best we can. And the part where the saw cut off the limb just won’t look good. You might think you can add your natural edge by simply cutting it to replicate the natural curve. However, they never look good in my opinion. This is because all the natural curves of the tree have corresponding natural curves in the grain. If we try to imitate the curve without the right grain, it will look like we faked it, which we did. This can be quite annoying, especially if you only have one or two shelves and they both have straight cuts.

Other than avoiding straight edges, I don’t have any hard and fast rules. I don’t like large areas of exposed resin if I can help it (looks ridiculous and is expensive). So ideally I’d like to fit one curve to another piece that curves in roughly the same area. It imitates a real river in the most natural way. If you continue with your suggestion, I have been inspired in the past by finding aerial photos of real rivers. This can be especially useful when adding islands to a river or other debris to mimic a bay, for example.

Once you’ve completed your layout, mark your shape on the boards with chalk or a pencil. I mark my lines 2″ more in length and width. That way I have an inch of room for error on each side. I have to get accurate measurements for my clients. If you or your client can handle a small size, probably make your marks a little closer to the final size.

I have a pretty good one man business. So I was lucky enough to buy some tools that your average DIYer couldn’t justify. One such tool is the Festool band saw. While this greatly simplifies certain tasks, such as cutting these panels to size, it is not essential. But I think it must have some kind of circular saw. You could potentially do this with just a jigsaw or even a handsaw, but it would be much more difficult.

Whether you’re using a jigsaw, miter saw, or regular circular saw, simply cut along the lines you’ve marked. Don’t be afraid to make them absolutely perfect. The table is reduced to the final size after the epoxy is poured. The cleaner and straighter you can make these cuts, the less epoxy you will use.

You want to make your table only from good, hard wood. No soft or rotten wood. Unfortunately, really great table pieces like this often have rotted spots, large buttonholes, or other parts that need to be addressed. The good news is that when working with epoxy, you can always fill a hole or void with resin.

For bark and really soft places, a blunt chisel and a hammer will suffice. Go to town until you get most of it. However, my favorite tool for cleaning worktops is an angle grinder with a stainless steel wire disc. One of the reasons I like the angle grinder and wire wheel is that it removes all the softwood and leaves all the hardwood. I also use smaller nylon wheels attached to my drill for hard to reach places. The Porter Cable Restorer is really a very good tool for the money. Their stainless steel wheel is aggressive enough to dislodge rotten wood. While their nylon wheel is soft enough to remove light stuff without damaging the wood. FYI, the stainless steel wheels on the sander and restorer will leave light marks on the wood.

This step requires discussion. I’ve talked to some very good resin table makers who choose to skip this step. I always tape the edges though. The main reason not to seal the edges is that you can achieve a better fit without caulking. Because the resin has a chance to really penetrate the wood when it hardens. The main reason for sealing the edges is to prevent any staining that may occur due to colored resin seeping into the wood. Especially the lighter trees. Powder pigments don’t stain as badly as liquid paint if you choose not to glue the edges. Another benefit of edge sealing for clear tables is that you get a lot less bubbles in your epoxy. Air is trapped in the raw wood, and if you don’t seal your edges, the air will escape and remain floating in the finished epoxy field. You will often hear that people have problems with “microbubbles”. Sealing will significantly reduce the number of microbubbles.

Over the past year I have changed the sealing method. I worked with the folks at Liquid Glass epoxy to come up with a method to achieve an edge-free joint while protecting the edge seal.

I completely seal the top, bottom and sides with the same epoxy I use on my river section. Usually using a disposable brush or sponge roller. Nothing fancy here, just pull the whole piece(s). Then I let the epoxy start to harden for about 12-18 hours. At this point, the epoxy will be partially cured and tacky, but not hard. This means that it is cured enough to prevent discoloration and air sealing, but also tacky enough that we can still get that good “chemical” bond. Unlike my previous method of caulking with epoxy, let it fully cure, lightly spread and then pour. What is called a “mechanical” connection.

All you have to do is make the box the size you want for your finished table, plus any cushions you’ve added. If I wanted a finished table 96×42″, I would cut the boards to 98×44″ and make the box to fit those 98×44 dimensions. I added at least 2″ on the sides to the thickness of my boards. So if my boards are 2″ thick, I cut my sides to 4″ tall.

When assembling the box, I strongly recommend adding quick-dry sealant to all edges. This makes it waterproof for the aquarium and will go a long way to prevent leaks. I recommend using silicone sealant or construction adhesive. In fact, they can work a little too well. And he can
