Furniture with a live edge is easily recognized. When you see or touch a table with a straight edge, it’s easy to tell what kind of wood it is. This is because during live edge production, the outer edges of the wood are stripped of the bark, but they will look different. It is rustic and modern at the same time and each piece is unique. These features give live edge tables their exceptional character.

Things To Know About Live Edge Furniture — Home

The beauty of living people lies in their imperfections. For example, fallen or damaged wood that is not suitable for furniture production is ideal for working with live edges. Cracks, rough edges and grain are accentuated in live edge furniture. The epoxy river coffee table looks pretty easy to make, right? Take a live end of a tree, split it in half, shape it, pour resin, shape it… simple. It just wasn’t the same for me. If you’re thinking of making your own epoxy table, you can learn a thing or two from my mistakes.

The basic steps to making a straight river table are pretty easy to see, but it’s not a cheap project, so you don’t want to mess it up. Do your research. I didn’t research enough before. I usually like to jump into a project and then learn from my mistakes. In retrospect, these are the lessons I should have read first:

I started this riverside coffee table with live cherry wood that I bought from The Wood Source in Ottawa. It was about four feet long and 18 inches wide. Tony split it in half for me on the table, then I smoothed it and peeled it off the live edge.

Then I designed the shape. I used 3/4″ melamine strips for the sides of the pan and 1/4″ melamine strips for the bottom.

I thought the 1/4″ melamine for the bottom would be smooth and the coffee table would come off after the resin cured. It doesn’t!

The 1/4″ MDF didn’t come out all at once. No, it was like a thousand copies. It was only after a few hours of cutting and using a belt sander to remove the rest. Save time and use solid melamine to shape!

After the cherry wood was prepped and the mold made, it was time to pour the resin. First, I mixed a small amount of two part epoxy and coated the bottom of the mold. That way you won’t get bubbles under the coffee table. Then I carefully placed two pieces of live wood into the mold and clamped it to the mold.

Time to mix tar for the next river. I mixed up a quart of resin and added a small amount of blue clear paint and green paint. The plan was to make the river light blue to resemble a tropical ocean. I thought the amount of dye I added would be the perfect color. It looked fine when I mixed it, but the resin changed color as it cured. It looked more like the toxic waste of a river than a Jamaican beach, and I didn’t like it.

My goal was to get a perfectly smooth glass finish and finish with one coat of resin. It didn’t happen. As I said, I spent a few hours sanding the melamine on the bottom and then sanding the top to smooth it out. Here’s what the top looks like after sanding…

Now back to the issue of color, because the story of this coffee table comes out really well

To correct the color, I mixed up a small batch of epoxy and added lots of clear blue paint and a small drop of opaque black pigment. I poured it under the coffee table, just above the river.

After it hardened, I sanded the resin to give it a matte finish. From the table top the color deepened to a beautiful sapphire.

The final step for this resin coffee table was to pour the top layer. I mixed the resin, poured it and spread it over the top and edges using straight cardboard.

Any bubbles can then be removed using a torch or a straw. Once you’re happy with the top and make sure there are no drips on the sides or bottom, release it! Let it dry untouched for 24 hours.

My last mistake was that I (or Tony, I don’t know who to blame) touched and made the impression before the resin hardened. I was thinking of sanding the whole thing and giving it a matte finish, but the gloss epoxy is really nice. So I lightly sanded the top with 400 grit paper to remove fingerprints and poured another coat of epoxy. The end result was perfect, with no fingerprints and a smooth and shiny finish.

Wouldn’t your socks be knocked off if you worked full time screwing up the table while you were standing? No, it’s not funny Tony. It never happened to me. Actually installing the legs was the smoothest part of building this coffee table.

I bought the metal legs from Lowe’s and painted them matte black. To install them, I pre-drilled a hole and used 5/8″ screws to attach the legs to the top.

All in all I am very happy with this river
