Start by removing the seat pad from the chair. Next, give the paint a quick sand to roughen the finish. If you are using a chalk finish paint, such as Decoart Everlasting Chalky Finish Paint, nothing more than a light sanding is required. Once the finish is sanded, remove the dust with a clean rag.
I set up my project in our garage, surrounded by DIY paint booths, so I don’t have to worry.
I typically apply 3 coats of DecoArt Chalk Finish Paint. If you use a sprayer, each coat will only take minutes, literally minutes. Can you tell I’m a fan? It’s just that I dreaded the furniture makeover and boring brush painting. Owning a paint sprayer has changed my whole approach to refinishing painted furniture.

While the paint is drying, download the farmhouse style image file. I chose a hydrangea flower, but I didn’t feel limited to that design. If the image you choose contains some letters or words, you need to flip it with this simple online tool.
Print the file on iron transfer paper and cut out the image with scissors. Stay close to the edges of the image when cropping. Leave only 1/2″ or less of excess transfer paper around the image.
Cut a piece of burlap fabric large enough to cover the seat of the chair. Stretch the canvas if necessary and find the center point of the fabric before applying the image. Follow the ironing instructions included with the iron-on transfer paper to apply the image to the fabric.

Of course, you don’t have to use burlap drop cloth. Any neutral, light-colored, iron-safe fabric will work. I chose burlap cloth because it is inexpensive and can be used for many DIY and craft projects.
Attach the finished fabric cover to the seat of the chair with a stapler. Fold the corners and pull the fabric tight while stapling. It’s a skill I haven’t mastered yet, but it’s very forgiving. You can always take the staple out, tighten the fabric and stitch again.
Now you’re ready for the crown jewel: replacing the padded seat. Isn’t that a beautiful farmhouse chair?
