How To Make A Dining Table Bench

How To Make A Dining Table Bench – If you’ve been following along a bit, you know that I recently threatened to build a custom living dining room table with welded legs for my family (spoiler alert, it turned out amazing). However, the only thing missing was its rope for the table. But not now! I finally got around to making them a custom living room bench with metal legs to match their table and even cooler, my friends at Home Depot helped me out. Here is the tutorial!

I think what I love most about live pieces is that they are 100% unique. No two pieces of live edge wood look the same. It’s basically the same wood type as a dining room table, but it looks like a freestanding piece and if my parents ever want to go back to using traditional chairs (they swear they don’t , but who knows)!

Another thing I love about this project is that I challenged myself to weld the base, and while I’m proud of that, I realize that welding isn’t an option for everyone. Here is a list of my favorite places to find great metal bases for your projects:

1. First I cut my board to regular size. I did this using a circular saw. The dimensions didn’t have to be perfect, but I needed to make the board a little smaller to fit in my shop.

2. Next, I proceeded to fill the voids in the board with epoxy resin. I chose this because I like how it looks and it helps stabilize the cracks in the board. I made sure to tape all the gaps all the way through the board.

3. Once the resin dried, I began preparing the metal for welding. These steps are completely optional. therefore,

In my original project, I had no way to cut the metal in my shop, so I decided to let Metal Warehouse do it for me. However, this time I was able to get Diablo 7-1/4. x 48 TPI Cermet Steel Demon Saw Blade Blade for ferrous metals in my metal cutting circular saw and you guys got me excited.

The tip fits my 7 ¼’ RIDGID circular saw and cuts through steel like an absolute champ. Even cooler, I might keep it for a while to use for any future metal projects be it steel posts, angles, slide bars, channels, carved wood. So it burned.

4. After cutting the metal, I used my angle grinder to remove some material from the steel pipe to create a clean weld area.

7. Next I used my drill and metal drill to make holes in my flat bars for the threaded pins to go through.

9. Finally, I gave the bases a good clean with a flat bar to prepare them for painting.

10. For the paint, I first used a metal primer to prep the base and then used metal paint to spray black.

12. Once the live edge board was stable and dry, it was time to cut it to final shape. I wanted it to be a really clean cut and I had to use a heavy circular saw to do that. So I have 7-1/4 for Diablo. x 36 TPI carbide saw blade for wood and metal.

Like the metal edge, it was compatible with my 7 1/4″ inert circular saw. It cuts slabs of ash about 2 inches thick with absolute ease.

13. After cutting the board to final size, I prepared it for finishing. First I cleaned and broke off most of the bark with a brush. This took a while, so I also used an angle grinder (totally optional) to help.

14. Next, I used my powerful hand planer to smooth out the dry resin and give the final shape on both sides.

15. Next, I went to cut the pill well. I also used a wire brush to help define and clean up funky imperfections like fly holes and sod.

17. Then it was time to add the base. First I used a screwdriver to make the holes for the threaded wires and then connected them using my own screwdriver and a plug that goes through the screw hole.

18. Last time I attached the custom metal base to the board, I had some trouble getting the slots to line up well enough for the screws to fit perfectly. So this time I decided to pull some tools out of my new 432 piece mechanic’s tool kit to make it.

Specifically, the mechanic tool set includes 229 sockets, 124 accessories, 74 sockets and 5 sockets. So regardless of the size of the normal chips, I had the tools to work with. Even better, the screws run about 1 ¼” apart so they were perfect for attaching the bases since I had a little slack.
