How To Make A Ping Pong Ball At Home – Do you have a bunch of everyday items lying around? Do you have time? Then why not make a table tennis ball shooter? It’s easy to do, sure, but still fun to shoot.
Punch two holes 1.5 inches down and 0.5 inches from each side of the cardboard. Pencils will go here.
How To Make A Ping Pong Ball At Home
Make lines ¼ inch from the edge and 1 ⅛ inch on either side of the edge of the cardboard. There should be 1 ¼ inch between them. Glue the cardboard pieces you just made there at a slight angle to the edges.
Ping Pong Ball Launcher
Cut four 1 x 1 inch squares and glue them on top of each other. Then cut two 1 x 3 inches and glue them on top of each other. Then take the 1 x 1 stack and glue them on top of the 1 x 3 stack.
Glue two rubber bands to the item you made earlier, about ½ inch from each side. (Shown in previous image.)
Attach the rubber to the pencils under the hot glue circle and place the object behind the two pieces of cardboard so that the rubber sticks out slightly.

When you pull, the object retracts, the rubber bands are on top with a table tennis ball in a ready position. Then let go and shoot.

The ping pong mortar is one of the most rewarding projects I’ve ever done for the time and effort it took to create. The construction is simple and the fireball-like combustion reaction can shoot a ping-pong ball 40′ – a remarkable distance for such a light object!

1. (Images 1 and 2) Cut a 2″ (5 cm) slit in one of the tubes and bend the ends slightly.

5. (Image 3) Cover everything with long strips of tape. The strap holds everything together, increasing its durability.
6. (Image 1) Apply several long strips of tape along the length of the two remaining tubes. The strap isn’t necessary, but it adds a bit of durability and makes it look a lot better.
8. (Image 3) Glue the pinched end of each tube to the side of the barrel, about ¼” from the top.

The angle at which you glue the legs of the bipod is up to you. For more impact, glue them over it in a way that angles the barrel up. To turn it into a cannon-like launcher, rotate the barrel slightly upwards.
9. Punch a hole in the top of the plastic bottle near the neck. Make sure the hole is wide enough for the handle of your lighter to fit snugly inside.
1. (Picture 1) Throw the ball into the barrel. The ball should stop somewhere in the middle of the barrel due to the cut and folded section created in Step 1. If not, see Tips and Troubleshooting.

2. Place the mortar FIRST. If you take too long to move and aim, you will run out of fuel.
3. (Image 2) Unscrew the bottle cap and fill the back half of the barrel with a 1 second burst of hairspray. Don’t overfill or it won’t work. There must be enough oxygen for combustion.
4. (Image 3) Quickly screw the lid back on, replace the can and insert the grill lighter. It should fit properly. If it is loose, the explosion can partially go off by opening the braai lighter.
Speed, Spin And Control
5. Click ignition and fire! You should hear a loud and satisfying BANG! and watch a small fireball (and a ping pong ball) explode from the barrel.
6. After each shot, loosen the cap and blow clean air through the entire barrel. This removes the gaseous byproduct of the combustion reaction. If you do not remove the cylinder, these gases will prevent further combustion.
Make two small holes near the center and insert a skewer or other thin, flame-resistant material through them. The test pin prevents the ball from slipping.
Ping Pong Ball Shooters
First, there may not be the right mixture of fuel (hairspray) and oxygen. If you pick up the lighter and nothing happens, try this: quickly remove the lighter, blow a puff of air into the hole, and reinsert the lighter to try again. The introduction of an amount of O2 may be sufficient to start combustion.
Second, the paper towel tube may be too large. The table tennis ball should only be able to slide in the barrel. If there is too much space between the ball and the inside of the barrel, the blast will travel around the ball. We want the blast to stay behind the ball, thus forcing it out. You can reduce the size of the inside diameter of the barrel by cutting another paper towel tube to size and placing it inside the barrel (Images 1 and 2). Repeat until the ping pong ball barely slides down the barrel or even needs to be tapped gently to get it into place. Throw ping pong balls in the air with this fun (and simple!) homemade toy. You probably have everything on hand to make one, and it’s a great opportunity to learn about energy transfer as well. Yes to STEM learning!

The design is quite simple. Cut off the bottom of the bottle. Then cut four notches around the edge. Slide the rubber bands through the notches to make an X as shown below.
Use a hammer and nail to make a hole in the bottle cap (adult job). Tie a string to the connection of the two rubber bands. Thread the string down through the cap hole, then tie a bead to the bottom of the string.
When you pull back on the lip, the rubber bands gain potential energy. Release the lip and the energy is transferred to the ball!

When we made our first one, we didn’t attach the lip. It seemed optional, so we tried shooting without it. The original post said the ball traveled 15 feet, but ours barely went anywhere! He seemed to have no power. Tried longer rubber bands which helped some but not much. So we decided to try adding the lip. BIG DIFFERENCE! Our ping ball flew across the room! Or shoot and hit the ceiling!
So what made the difference? I’m not 100% sure, but I think there are two things here. One is that the string sticks to the finger a bit when you let it go, which causes energy loss. You can get a clean release with the lip that prevents it from taking energy from the rubber bands. The other is that the lip hits the cap when you release it, causing the elastics to suddenly stop and release the ping pong ball.
