I’m about to go to a dentist appointment, but I wanted to take a few minutes to write something. I wanted to write about the need to be grateful every day and every moment of our lives. So I originally started this post a few days ago and haven’t had a chance to finish it. Tuesday was a busy day with my son and I driving for about four hours. As a result, health problems arose in a family member. Wednesday came and went and I actually went to bed around 11pm which is early for me. I’m unconscious but here I am Thursday morning to finish this post. Tuesday’s situation discouraged me a bit, but it got me thinking about what I originally wanted to write.
It’s always easier to thank God when you’re doing well. It is necessary to enjoy these moments of peace and joy. I think God wants us to enjoy these moments because he gives them to us. When I first wrote the post I felt pretty good. Then Tuesday came and I wasn’t feeling so well anymore. But it has helped me to remember that God doesn’t just want us to be thankful for the good times. God wants us to be grateful even in bad and discouraging times.

I always look back to Job as a point of reference when faced with difficulties. My problems are not comparable to his, but his story gives us an example. Job lost everything. He lost his farms, animals, workers and children. Imagine waking up with this message. I think we would all feel discouraged and hopeless. But the Bible tells us that Job’s first reaction was to praise God.
Then Job got up and tore his cloak and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped himself and said: Empty came I out of my mother’s womb, and empty will I return there; The Lord gave and the Lord gave. it took; Blessed be the name of the Lord. In all this, Job sinned not, nor foolishly commanded God. – Job 01/20/22
Job did not complain nor curse God. His first reaction was to praise the name of the Lord. He knew that God could take away from him whatever blessings he had enjoyed until then, just as God had given them to him. But it wasn’t about the blessings, it was about the one giving those blessings.
God Gives Another Day To Start Over
Think about how you want others to love you. Do you want someone to appreciate you only for what you gave them, or would you rather they just love you for who you are? I think we would all prefer the latter. I would. I think God prefers that too. God is a generous God and is more than willing to help his children. But he’s also happy when we thank him and show him that we just love him for who he is.
Every day is a good time to say thank you. When we wake up we can thank God for remembering us and giving us another day in life. When we are ready to usher in a day, we can thank Him for providing that day. When we find reasons to be thankful, we find fewer reasons to complain. God invites us to a grateful attitude.
