The apostle Paul knew very well that life can be happy one moment and terrible the next, or up and down in one moment. Therefore, having learned to be content in whatever condition he finds himself, he exhorts us to do the same thanks to God “UNDER all circumstances.”

We are told to thank God when things are going well and seem to be going in our favor and when things are not going so well and seem to be going the opposite way.

Sometimes life calls for a real reality check! God must give us a glimpse in the midst of our complaining, a vision of what might be.

Today we should all open our mouths and thank God for Jesus who died to save us by grace through faith. We should thank him for continuing to work in our lives for good, to bless us and not to harm us.

And what should be our gratitude? For all things! Thank God for your faith, for your friends, for the food and for the water you drink? You may ask, “Should I thank God for the dirty dishes?” Well, many people would like to have dirty dishes; that would mean they had something to eat. But also, just be thankful for your riches – the things that God has given you and done for you.

At church, a family heard about a couple who made a significant love offering in memory of their son who died on the battlefield. On the way home, the wife asked her husband, “Why don’t we make an equal offer for our son?” He said, “Why? But how? How is it possible to always thank God for everything? Beginning in verse eighteen, Paul says that this is possible because of three things. First of all, we must give thanks in the Spirit. He says, “And do not get drunk with wine, which is superfluous; but be filled with the Spirit.” You see, to be filled with the spirit is to be thankful. If you are not grateful, you are not filled with the spirit. On the other hand, there is no way you can be witty and ungrateful. A sign of a spirit-filled life is gratitude.

This Is The Will Of God

James 1:17 says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness or shadow of turning.” Don’t think negatively about God. God is good. He is your Father.

So, in the Spirit… the Father… and through the Son. Verse 20 also says to give thanks “in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Give thanks to God in the name or authority of Christ. You don’t have to understand everything God does. Even if you don’t understand, you can just say, “In the name of Jesus, thank you.”

Make it a daily habit, as I do, to lift up your heart to praise God when you get out of bed each morning. Just say, “Lord God, I love you and praise you.” What a great way to start your day and live your life! We have no doubt that many thank God in their prayers. But can we honestly say that our goal is to find the good in EVERYTHING?

When life happens to all of us, we react by being: happy, excited, worried, overcome with fear or anxiety. And if we’re being real…too many times we answer first and pray last.

Let’s not get this twisted, we are no exception. Over a decade ago, when we were experiencing financial hardship, we learned firsthand what it means to thank God in all circumstances.

One fall evening, we started cooking dinner, and the stove didn’t work. After 30 minutes of trying to get it to work, we decided to call the gas company to make sure they received our payment.

The customer service rep told us they received the payment. Unfortunately, they got it after they planned to shut it down. In order to turn it back on, we had to go to their office and pay a reconnection fee.

We barely managed to pay, let alone the connection fee. However, the biggest obstacle that night was finding a way to eat dinner. Our gas stove was not working. We had no food that could be eaten uncooked. And there was no extra money to order, with two children to feed.

While we were looking at our fridge and wondering what to do, we noticed our handwritten note taped to the front of the fridge. He said; thanks to God for everything, everything will pass you by!”

We wrote that message on our fridge to remind us to focus on God and not our circumstances. That evening we decided to have a picnic on the living room floor. We had to put our pride aside and call our family to ask for help ordering pizza.

The kids had a blast – they thought it was really cool to have a picnic on the floor and eat pizza. Not to mention, the kids didn’t even know the gas was off.

The next morning we went down to the Gas Company. After he explained the situation to us, God gave us favor, because we were able to turn on the gas without additional payments.

The next evening, as we sat around the table eating a home cooked meal, the kids commented how our picnic dinner on the floor was better than dinner at the table!

Really – after mom made dinner. God will use situations in our lives to show us how good He is; as opposed to how bad we think we are.
