Grants For People With Lupus – This week, more than 350 advocates took to Capitol Hill as part of the largest national defense summit, urging Congress to increase funding for critical research and support for education programs. Additionally, virtual defenders who share their stories have sent more than 4,000 emails to members of Congress. In total, attorneys contacted 518 congressional offices. Combined, they delivered a powerful message – support more funding for research and programs that can improve the lives of those affected by the disease.
These programs are essential to the advancement of research. They are designed to increase their understanding of cancer, its causes and how it can be treated; speed up the time to diagnosis and ensure people get the care they need as soon as possible; and increase enrollment in clinical trials, which can accelerate the development of new treatments.

The annual two-day event held in Washington, D.C. also offered empowerment programs and activities for attendees, including roundtable discussions on drug research and development as well as training to help advocates to tell their stories when they meet with representatives throughout the year.

The summit also included a parallel “Children’s Congress” focusing on children and including programs for young activists and their families. More than 30 teens and young adults who live with them attended the Children’s Congress and participated in educational activities such as how to track symptoms, identify disease triggers and other topics designed to help children cope better with the disease Importantly, Kids’ Congress provided bespoke advocacy training that helps young advocates tell their stories and the unique impact of the disease on children.

This year, Judy Barlin, who sits on the Foundation’s Board of Directors and chairs the Board’s Advocacy and Government Relations Committee, received the inaugural Sandra C. Raymond Lawyer of the Year Award. Judy’s son, Michael, died at the age of 24. She, along with her husband Wayne, has dedicated countless hours to advocating for affected families and ensuring their children’s needs are recognized in research. Judy’s vision led the Foundation to launch the Children’s Research Program – funding research and supporting advocacy for children. Last year, we saw that these efforts led Congress to direct the CDC to fund nearly $1 million for pediatric research this year. She and her husband have supported and promoted millions of dollars to advance research and established the Michael Jon Barlin Pediatric Research Program in memory of their son Michael.
