How Do People Die From Leukemia – Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is also called acute lymphoblastic leukemia. ALL is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. In acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the disease affects white blood cells called lymphocytes. It progresses quickly and forms immature blood cells that attack and eventually overtake mature cells. This type of leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children and has a high chance of being cured. It can also happen in adults, but even with treatment, the chances of recovery are greatly reduced.
Leukemia occurs when changes occur in the DNA (genetic material) of the bone marrow. DNA tells the cell what to do and tells it when to grow and when to die. But in ALL, this does not happen, so the mutation causes the bone marrow to continue to grow and divide.
