How Long Do Hiv Patients Live – Editor’s Note: As 2020 draws to a close, we bring you some of our most memorable stories from this very challenging year. Here, editor Grace Birnstengel presents the profiles of four aging HIV-positive people. Their life stories are full of wisdom, hope, and resilience that we can all learn from. This story was made possible with the support of the John A. Hartford Foundation.

More than 500,000 people over the age of 50 in the United States are aging due to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which, if left untreated, causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS.

While some contracted HIV/AIDS later in life (often due to a lack of sexual health promotion among the elderly), most of these survivors were diagnosed decades ago, during the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s, the virus was at best inappropriate and at worst inhumane. Before the terminology we use now was available. Before effective drugs appeared. Before understanding how HIV/AIDS is actually transmitted. Previously, life expectancy was more than a few years.

Aging With Hiv/aids: ‘we Weren’t Expected To Live This Long’

Long-term survivors of HIV/AIDS have overcome traumatic combinations of adverse life events and are now aging into their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond. And they fight: PTSD and other mental illnesses are basically ubiquitous; housing and financial insecurity (when you are not expected to live, you do not plan for the future); health problems that doctors cannot explain or fully understand, and the devastating isolation and loneliness of the entire community.

Grace Birnstengel: How has the world and the conversation about HIV – or not – changed since you were diagnosed?

Stephanie Stuart: I think the stigma still exists. I’ve met guys who expected me to take PrEP [a daily drug to prevent HIV], expected me to know my status, but they didn’t care about me. They’re not on PrEP. They don’t know their status. And when you ask them: Why? It is, “Oh, I don’t have to, I’m not in danger.” We are

In danger, baby. Everyone should know their status. People worry that they will get this deadly disease, which is no longer a deadly disease.

The Hiv Positive Brain In The Art Age

I think the conversation has calmed down and needs to be louder. I feel like I’m standing alone on a street corner with a sign that says, “Hey, I still have HIV.” I still have it.” Everyone is passing by. Nobody wants to help. Nobody wants to talk about it. People are still getting infected every day. Sadly, people still die from disease, but many of us live much longer, and that’s not a death sentence I’ve been handed down. It builds complacency in our community. If your status is positive then go to the doctor, start taking this drug, make your status undetectable and then no one can transmit the virus to anyone else. Undetectable equals impenetrable.

I don’t want us survivors to forget what we’ve been through. Because many of us carry survivor guilt. When I was first diagnosed, it was a period where someone would come into a bar and hear they had just been diagnosed, and I could really pull out a calendar and mark a year and a half to two years and somewhere around that time would disappear. And a lot has happened. I lost many friends during this time.

I want to remind people: don’t forget what we’ve been through. But you also have to celebrate the fact that – look at the progress we’ve made in treating HIV and how many of us are now healthy. When I was HIV positive. I came home… It’s a wonder I didn’t turn off the road the day I got home. I cried all the way home. When I got home I literally threw myself on the floor and had an outburst of anger and a breakdown. I’ve just been told I only have two years to live.

“What if the government changes its mind about HIV and everything disappears?”

I’m only fifty-four, but taking HIV meds for so long says it ages your organs. So my organs might be around sixty-four. Sometimes I feel that my strength is running out. I’m worried I don’t have enough food. I worry that one day I won’t have a place to live. What if the government changes its mind about HIV and everything disappears? But one thing that worries me the most – and it’s probably because I’m worried about my [deceased] wife – is that I can’t take care of myself because I don’t really have anyone to rely on. At this point, if I get sick, it may not be HIV. It could be a heart attack. It could be a stroke – something like that that can tire you out. And then you have that in addition to remembering to take your HIV medication.

I just hope that doesn’t happen. I really hope that when my time comes, I’ll be on stage somewhere, do the final death drop and check. A few years ago [in St. Petersburg, Florida] there was a benefit and one of my sisters walked off the stage into the dressing room and collapsed. And she left. They said her heart exploded. And I kept thinking, “I’m going to miss you, damn girl.” That’s how it’s done. Go your own way, do what you love.” If that’s my case and I need someone… I’m deeply spiritual and I’m sure the Lord will take care of it and someone will be there.

Women And Hiv

What message would you like to send to younger people living with HIV or those who have recently been diagnosed?

How Long Do Hiv Patients Live

You don’t have to be afraid anymore. When I was diagnosed then, it was a situation where someone would be diagnosed with HIV and come back two weeks later and then say, “Oh, you’re not just HIV, you’re full-blown AIDS” – they hardly have time to digest the fact that the tests gave tested positive and now they have this terrible disease. And these situations are almost out of date today.

Surprising Things You May Not Know About Hiv/aids Today

Robert Toth: Well, it got really confusing. I had an appointment with my HIV doctor and I said, “Can you solve the question? Am I a person living with AIDS or living with HIV? She said, “Well, you both are, but you’re people living with AIDS.” The word AIDS should be used. If you’ve ever been diagnosed with two hundred or fewer T cells, no matter where they are now, you’re still a person living with AIDS. It was a surprise for me. I thought, “That’s really depressing, but thanks for the clarification.” This distinction is important because it is important not to write off all those who die of AIDS. We are fortunate to live in a country that has the Ryan White CARE Act, which ensures that these medicines are made available free of charge to anyone who needs them. Thank you, Ryan White. God bless you. Jeanne White, his mother, is an AIDS activist. God loves her for what she does.

I’ve had the life experience of being ninety, but I’m only sixty. I lost all my peers. My peers are dead. I buried them, scattered their ashes, went to their memorials. So welcome us. Invite us to dinner. This could be a cheap place. I can eat dinner. I never expect anyone to pay. we are going to the cinema. It’s nice to get out of the apartment. Know we’re still here. hug us. Hugging changes body chemistry.

Well, about three weeks ago, I was in the hospital emergency room and I couldn’t call anyone. There was no one to answer the damn phone number one, and if they did, I wouldn’t know what to do. So there’s just this feeling of loneliness. It’s not healthy. I have a cat and cats are cats. Can I take my cat for a walk? I can try, but it won’t work.
