Best Internet Speed Tests Of 2022: Here’s How Fast Your Internet Really Is
Metros cover many cities, some even across the country – giving a broad overview of major cities and their internet speeds.
Washington state download speed is 129.1 Mbps. DC’s speed is nearly four times that of the slowest metro: Charleston, West Virginia.
A total of 37 metros have an average download speed of 100 Mbps, while six metros have an average download speed of 120 Mbps. We’ve also given an average download speed rating, which represents the “average person’s” experience on Metro; Average speed appears faster because it includes people with 10 faster internet speeds.
Charleston had the slowest speed of the 100 largest metros at 32.7 Mbps. Next slowest is Boise, Idaho, at 56.9 Mbps. Only 38 of the 100 largest metros fell below the average of 89.3 Mbps.

But over the past 12 months, internet speeds seem to be improving – sometimes dramatically – across the board. The pace has increased with the demands of the pandemic – more people are working from home, studying remotely, accessing health care and staying at home for entertainment.
When we look at the average speed, which may better represent the speed of the average person, we see a jump of 20 Mbps from New York City’s average of 57.5 Mbps to 79.94 Mbps over the course of the year.
In our report of Internet speed in cities (not metro), we recorded the fastest in Whitestone, New York (138.4 Mbps) and the slowest in Stowe, Vermont (7.3 Mbps).
Metro covers many cities, so our 2021 report has consistent download speeds. Right now, the fastest cities are moving into the slowest and vice versa.
Ways To Work From Home With Rural Internet
If you want to live near a big city without paying city prices, you can get the internet speed you need in every US metro area.
Internet speeds in the Appalachian city of Huntsville, Alabama, increased a full 200% from February 2020 to February 2021 – from 27 Mbps to 82 Mbps on average. Rochester, New York also saw a big speed bump, going from 23 Mbps to 56 Mbps, a 140% increase.
Five other cities saw their Internet speeds double or nearly double, including Des Moines, Iowa; and Madison, Wisconsin.
Not all US cities saw speeding increases last year, but overall the drop in speed was not as large as the increase. Average speeds in Colorado Springs, Colorado dropped 15% from 57 Mbps to 49 Mbps, while average speeds in Charleston, West Virginia dropped from 11 Mbps to 8 Mbps.

According to Ookla, average US residential Internet speeds for fixed broadband in October 2022 will be about 182 Mbps download and 22 Mbps download — more than the 25/3 minimum set by FCC.
