Are Ultrawide Monitors Worth It?
In truth, the graphics card is somewhat in a transition phase. Intel’s new Arc series has spawned some interesting but unessential low-end options, and of course there’s the RTX 4090, upcoming RTX 4080, and AMD’s recently announced Ryzen 7000 cards.
Pay megabucks. But that big space in the middle? This domain in 1440p and 1080p at high speed? Slightly embarrassing, that. It’s basically your choice of waiting for cheaper RTX 40/RX 7000 models and crossing your fingers, or taking the known amount of an existing GPU, knowing that in a few months a newer, better one will come along fitted replacement could be here.
At this point, I personally lean more towards the “wait and see” school of thought. However, we can only recommend cards that we have tested ourselves, which again can only happen if they actually exist outside of the hypothetical. Unfortunately, “cheap” has become an even more relative term when it comes to graphics cards, but here’s a fact: The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 is the most affordable GPU on the market to offer Nvidia’s RTX capabilities. Namely ray tracing and DLSS support. Even last-gen cards like the RTX 2060 can cost you more, and while the competing Radeon RX 6500 XT is still more affordable, I found AMD’s GPU to perform really poorly compared to the RTX 3050.
Sure, the MSI-built RTX 3050 I tested costs £350/$330, and for a bit more you could upgrade to an RTX 3060. But if you can find a cheaper, more luxurious model, you’ll get a better deal. for that very capable 1080p GPU (which also has some limited 1440p capabilities). Largely thanks to DLSS, which is essentially free FPS and is absent from both cheaper AMD cards and the RTX 3050’s predecessor like the GTX 1650 Super.
Another plus for the RTX 3050? It’s more widely available than most GeForce RTX cards, which should give you more freedom to buy at better prices.

Since you can save money on the RTX 3050, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 is now your best bet to combine affordability and 1080p performance. You still get DLSS and ray tracing support, and with the latter you probably won’t need to slash as many other quality metrics to maintain good frame rates as you would with the RTX 3050.
At 1920 x 1080, you can generally expect average frame rates to exceed 60 fps even when using the maximum graphics settings. The RTX 3060 also has some cutting edge at 1440p, although the beefed-up RTX 3060 Ti (below) is better suited for Quad HD tasks.

Gaming at max settings at 2560×1440 requires a lot more power than 1920×1080, but Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is the card to beat right now at speeds of 60 fps at max settings. It seems to be one of the more persistent graphics cards in terms of price drops, but if you find it on sale you won’t regret buying it. Not only is it capable of hitting 60 fps at max settings in today’s newest games, like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, but it’s also able to deliver frame rates in excess of 70-80 fps in slightly larger blockbusters.

The RTX 3060 Ti has also significantly improved ray tracing performance over Nvidia’s previous generation of RTX cards, meaning you can actually play today’s ray tracing games in 1440p instead of settling for 1080p. Playing ultrawide PC games is almost like playing in 4K, but thankfully the lower 3440 x 1440 resolution of most ultrawide monitors means you can get away with a slightly cheaper graphics card. For us, that’s the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070, although our testing has shown that an older RTX 2070 Super or AMD’s Radeon RX 6800 can also get the job done.
In fairness, Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3080 is another solid choice for ultrawide monitor owners, and those determined to game at the highest possible settings and highest refresh rates will no doubt benefit greatly from its extra performance . However, for us, the cheapest RTX 3070 is the best value overall, as it delivers very playable framerates at 3440×1440 and below, and is probably the closest thing to a “budget 4K graphics card” if you don’t have the budget for the RTX3080.
Ultrawide Vs. Dual Monitors: Which Should You Buy?
In fact, the RTX 3070 is more than capable of hitting 60 fps in most of today’s big games that support ultrawide resolutions, and it has plenty of horsepower to play at normal resolution, 16:9 at 2560 x 1440, to play even if the games don’t. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 actually has a growing list of new and higher-end Nvidia GPUs, from the RTX 3080 Ti to the RTX 4090. But while it’s also a premium GPU, you don’t really need anything more expensive. for 4K. It’s capable of a 60fps list on the max setting of almost every major GPU today (there are a few exceptions, of course, but they’re few and far between), and it surpasses its closest AMD-enabled rival by 4K, Radeon RX6800XT.

AMD’s offering is cheaper than the RTX 3080, at least on average, but it’s not as fast, both in terms of raw power and power and rail-pulling.
