Herman Miller Chair Won’t Stay Up

Herman Miller Chair Won’t Stay Up – The Herman Miller Aaron is an excellent office chair that is very comfortable and very well made. Long a fixture in the RainyDay office, but after twelve years, the pneumatic height adjustment cylinder has finally given way.

At first we weren’t sure what to do as there was no obvious way to remove the cylinder. Did we need a special tool? Do we have to send the whole chair in for service? Are you getting a brand new chair?

In the end, we came to the conclusion that the cylinder can be a standard object and it is not difficult to change it yourself …

A search on Amazon led us to Office Oasis, which provided everything we needed. Not only did they provide repair instructions, but the package we purchased from them included the right parts and tools for the job!

Since we ordered it from Amazon over Christmas, the package arrived in a few days without paying extra for express service!

BTW, we think anything ordered this time of year gets 2 day delivery whether you pay extra for it or not…

Secure the base by pulling the cylinder as far as it will go so the bottom of the cylinder doesn’t move when you hit it…yes, hit it! (The bottom of the cylinder is the dark part that sticks out from the bottom of the base.) The instructions recommend a rubber mallet, but any hand mallet. If you have people around, have them turn the chair upside down and hold the base while you hit the cylinder and let gravity help you.

Choosing The Right Office Chair

The main thing here is not to allow the base to move during the stroke of the cylinder. After a few hits, the cylinder should detach from the top of the base, as it is only held by the plastic collar on top of the base. Don’t miss it 🙂

With the base detached, remove the cylinder from the column. Sounds simple (if you’re HULK), but a “special tool” is provided for this step (for anyone who isn’t HULK), so…it wasn’t. C somehow.

The tool consists of two collars and two long bolts. The collars have two parts that are attached to the old gas cylinder stem. When the collars are attached to the old cylinder, turning the long bolt will remove the two collars (two collars,

The first collar should be attached loosely so that it slides along the cylinder. This collar is designed to push the seat off the cylinder and tightening it against the cylinder will prevent it. The ball end of the hex key is used to seat the bolt, as there may not be enough room for the other (longer) end.

This next step was more difficult for us, but hopefully you can learn from our experience.

Attach the second collar directly to the first, but turn it 90º so that the two collar holes are exposed.

Finish by passing through the holes of the loosely attached collar. You don’t want those bolts to go into the first collar, you want them to compress that first collar.

If you see a long bolt going into the collar, but you don’t see the two necks separating, then the bolt is going into the other collar… that’s not what you want.

It is also important that the second collar is as tight as possible on the stem. This second collar, unlike the first, must remain stationary in the cylinder, otherwise this method will never work.

Do not use the ball end of the hex key or you will break it! Trust us on this one. Use the small end of a hex wrench for this tightening step. (Ball end is good for odd angles but will not withstand torsional stress)

Replace the two bolts as you rotate them. If the seat is still on, you may be running out of space on the bolt. We had to adjust the bottom collar twice before pushing the seat. Make sure the bottom collar is tight on the rod after each transfer! After moving the collar a few times, we were finally able to remove the seat from the old cylinder.

Slide the plastic grommet (secured from step 1) onto the new gas cylinder, place the cylinder on the wheel base, and finally push the seat up. Done and done!

Why It’s Worth Investing In A Good Office Chair

This DIY can be done by anyone. The only tool not included in the package is the hammer. It took us 20 minutes to complete the project as it is the first time. If we had to do it again we could do it in five minutes…it’s easy if you get what we got for the job 🙂My Aaron chair has bugged me for the past year because the arm space won’t stay situation I’m looking into it all over the internet for a solution, but it seems Aaron has switched to a new system and I no longer have support. I have a knob that turns to lock and unlock the armrest height. Newer models have a lever that you turn, similar to a quick release on a bicycle wheel.

I finally figured I had nothing to lose so I decided to take Aaron apart to see if I could fix it myself. It turned out to be a pretty easy fix. The arm locking mechanism only needs to be tightened! Why hasn’t anyone mentioned this on all the websites I’ve looked at? Here is a quick and easy step-by-step guide.

First, remove the back of the Aaron chair. There are 4 screws securing the back of the seat and they are very easily removed with an allen wrench. This is what my chair looks like after the screws are off and the back is up.

If you look at the armrest risers, you will see the screw used to secure the mount to the seat back cover. The reason the arms don’t stay up is because the mount is loose. All you have to do is pull the steering wheel assembly. You’ll notice that even though the head gear is tight, there is play with the metal plates that are held in place by the hex screws. Use a wrench to tighten this bolt until it is tight. Don’t go crazy or you won’t be able to control the thumb wheel! Here is a picture of the screws for fastening.

Well, that’s all! After you have tightened the screws, put the support (4 screws) and enjoy your chair, they really stay at the height you set them.

I can’t believe how easy and how hard it is to find useful information on the internet! I hope this little post helps someone who has similar problems with their old Aaron chair.
