A few months ago I noticed a trend in Nike tracking, and I wasn’t happy. My organic search traffic had been going down for the last few months of the year and I was a little worried about it.

As a result, I decided to do a little research to find out what was going on. How to reverse a negative trend? How can I get more traffic from Google?

Tilting At Windmills #281

I can definitely dig into some more great content and start ranking that new content. But it pains me not to see the content I wrote years ago on Google.

So, it’s time for me to go back and update some old content and publish it again. After doing some research, I found that other bloggers and websites have seen significant results from deleting old content.

So, at the beginning of January I started updating some content that I haven’t done as much as I used to.

The results surprised me. Not just how much my traffic grew, but how fast it grew. I didn’t have to wait weeks or months, it was almost an instant!

February 2019 Update: Want an article update on content updates? i thought! 🙂 It’s been almost a year since I did this initial experiment and saw great results in the first 30 days. However, will the updates I make make my articles perform better in Google? Or were they given a small “news” boost and then quickly returned to where they were?

In general, many of the examples below have maintained or increased their traffic even after a full year! However, some of the articles I updated saw an initial jump and then died down. You can see my full updated results and screenshots below.

Want to see the steps I took to get organic traffic from Google fast? Read below.

In total, I updated 7 articles in January 2018. To show the results I get quickly, I am sharing a screenshot 30 days before content update and 30 days after content update.

February 2019 Update: I’ve included the original screenshots for your viewing pleasure. But I also included 2 additional screenshots showing what happened 1 year after the update. The first new screenshot compares the increase in traffic after today’s first update. The second screenshot compares traffic before today’s update.

In other words, the first new snapshot answers the question, does organic traffic continue to increase after the first 30 days? The second screenshot shows “How much organic traffic increased from update to date (1 year after update)?” Answers the question.

As you can see, every post I tried this process saw an increase in Google traffic. Some increased slightly, others increased. 712% increase in self-published articles in the first 30 days!

The best part is that for some of these articles, you can see an increase in traffic from Google almost immediately. Traffic increased within a day after publishing the last content.

The process of updating old content is a bit more involved. But, as you can see, the results are worth the effort.

First I need to figure out which blog posts to update. I used 3 methods to determine which of the hundreds of blog posts I needed to go back and update. Google Analytics was very helpful in making some of these decisions.

It’s hard to measure the impact of your content changes if you don’t document how your content changes before you start.

I have initial Google rankings, organic page views for the last 30 days, current word count, etc. I created a simple google spreadsheet to document things like

Actually, this is what I had in my spreadsheet (you can make your own if you want):

The World Has A Major Crude Oil Problem; Expect Conflict Ahead

These were my column headings, and then I filled in the information in a different row for each topic.

Over the past few months, I’ve started using a tool called MarketMuse that gives you a quality score for your content and shows you how to improve it.

The process is very simple when using Market Music. You enter the URL of your existing content and the desired keywords, then MarketMuse pulls the content and assigns a content score based on artificial intelligence.

However, what’s really cool is that MarketMuse takes it a step further and shows how your content compares to the top 20 Google results, giving you additional keywords.

For example, I created a “How to Build a Website” article for the Market Museum. (I rank #1 on Google for “Google Sites”).

It shows word count, content score, and performance score. I won’t go into the full tutorial, but it shows that my content is better than the competition (why I’m at the top of Google).

However, if I want to improve the content, it shows me what topics are included.

As you can see, there are many keywords, I don’t say, maybe. This will help me improve my content score and improve my ranking on Google for related queries.

If it’s not instrumental like market music, that’s fine! You can still try to find LSI (Linked Semantic Indexing).

However, you can also do “relevant searches” on Google to find out what to say in your content. These are at the bottom of the first page of Google. For example, here’s a search query for “local site”:

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the long term project. To be honest, Longtail Pro is a very useful tool that I still use to research keywords and target those keywords during my content update process. There is little competition.

Just because your content is long, it doesn’t guarantee a high ranking. However, there is a strong correlation between content length and ranking in Google.

The Disney Rankings

Many studies have been conducted that show that longer articles rank higher in search engines. According to Backlinks, the average first page is 1,900 words.

I try to keep it longer than that. However, the type of content you write for a niche is a very competitive market. For my affiliate sites I still like to shoot for 2000 words or more and often 3000 words of content.

You can use a free tool like WordCounter.net to check the number of any URL. So, if you want to check your competition for free, this is an option.

However, don’t just add a vein! The idea is to really enhance the content by adding depth to the topic. Think of ways to add examples or approach the topic from an angle you may not have seen the first time.

In addition to targeting the right keywords, optimizing content depth and word count, you should also consider ways to retain visitors.

Many people believe that the more time spent on your page, the higher you will rank in Google. It is closely related to the price of bamboo, which can be a good ranking indicator. The fewer people who return to Google after visiting your site, the higher Google will rank your site.

So, here are some quick tips to improve your audience’s reading time when you update your content.

After optimizing and refining the content based on the strategy I mentioned above, my next step is to add internal links.

I visit my site and find the content related to the updated article and link to the related article. Google evaluates internal links and improves the ranking of these links.

For the articles I’ve updated about Nike Tracking, I’ve added about 10 new links to the updated content. These were all internal links, so I didn’t have to get them or advertise them.
