Or, as René Descartes wondered, suppose there is an evil person who tricks us into thinking we exist, when we don't.

While the decision of Mr. Descartes has since been challenged by other thinkers, but for centuries he has committed to explaining everything through the door of rationality. However, this approach only gets us Westerners so far, and then we run into obstacles: not everything can be understood through rational thought; not everything knows what it is.

And that is what Mr. Dougherty's book tries to teach us: we cannot know everything through logic alone. His book is a good introduction to epistemology. He starts with Aristotle with his theories of determinism, and then four chapters later comes to Bohr, who destroyed determinism.

Mr. Dougherty's conclusion is this: while we want the certainty of deterministic solutions, we must settle for the vagueness of stochastic models. There is too much we will never know for sure.

The publisher SPIE considers this book important enough to distribute it for free as a PDF, and I recommend it as a starting point in understanding epistemology.

There is a reason that all cars, toasters and televisions connect to people the way they do. I would prefer to use a much more “hub and spoke” approach. Data is linked to objects in the model, rather than being entirely within the model. Render quality parts are replaced when renders are made. In the same way, documents are removed from the model, and then decorated from the outside.

What is often missing are the benefits of the model for generation outside of these parts of the project. Why is detail not requested or pulled from a library if the model has two different wall types? Or two types of flooring material? There is a lot that could be improved for the overall workflow if there was no need to keep everything in a model and within a single application.
