I really like the range of products in the Orange Pi range as they are the best products I have seen anywhere close to the Raspberry Pi. We also reviewed the Orange Pi Zero 2, which we expect to be a very capable board.

I just got an Orange Pi i96 (thanks!) and this board was on sale for ~$10 so fun! It is very cheap. Why it’s so cheap is that it’s a headless board without a display case.

If you are going to use the board headless (I use most of my SBCs headless) you can save a lot of money with this board. Let’s get started!

The Orange Pi i96 is an affordable board in SBC’s Orange Pi series. It uses RDA8810SoC and has 256MB LPDDR2 SDRAM. It’s perfect for headless work and surprisingly cheap.

Now select Orange Pi i96 from the list. I will be using Ubuntu Linux for this guide, but you can also use Armbian.

Images are usually distributed as .tar.gz files. The file name of Ubuntu image tar.gz at the time of writing is OrangePi_i96_ubuntu_xenial_server_linux3.10.62_v0.0.4.tar.gz.

We need to delete this file. If you are using Windows, you can download the 7-zip file and extract it from the .tar.gz file.

Inside this folder will be an .img file. Since I downloaded the Ubuntu image, my file name is OrangePi_i96_ubuntu_xenial_server_linux3.10.62_v0.0.4.img. This is the image we will write to the SD card.

There are many options for writing photos to your SD card. If you’re on Windows, I recommend Win32DiskImager. Etcher is also available for Windows/Linux/Mac OS X.

If you have a USB to Ethernet adapter, this is the easiest way to connect the device to the original configuration.

Zero 2 is a more powerful board. It is taller than the i96, but more expensive. If you need more power, this board is a better choice. If you’ve never had an Orange Pi before, I recommend the Zero 2 because the board is a bit complicated and has a lot of old firmware.

The version of Ubuntu on this board is quite old (Ubuntu 16.04 / Xenial) compared to the Orange Pi Zero 2, which runs a modern 5.X kernel, but it is a 3.X kernel.
