As wilderness events have evolved and our culture has become more mainstream and attention-grabbing, questions and concerns about camp size, relative breadth or specialization, need for interaction, and accommodation procedures have grown. How can camps grow and change? Where do we stand on torquey, plug and play or convenient camping? What course do we want to take in the next five to 10 years?

We need a vision to answer these questions and guide the Black Rock City community into the future. We need a clear, action-oriented vision that guides us without being too prescriptive We needed a vision that could inspire us as individuals, leaders, citizens and group members We needed a vision that was not conceived by a select few, but would come from the wisdom of our community
After months of hard work and community feedback, we’re excited to share this vision with you This vision sets the cultural direction for the Black Rock City residential area for the next five to 10 years.
For the past nine months, you, the global Burning Man community, have shared your thoughts, experiences, hopes and ideas with the Cultural Direction Setting Group. This group of 19 Black Rock City citizens, including camp leaders, staff, community members, regional liaisons and board members, digested community feedback and co-wrote the vision. In surveys, interviews, community conversations, online responses and live input sessions, we heard a lot. This vision addresses many of the cultural challenges we face in residential areas of Black Rock City. The scope of the philosophy is the city itself – the place where we live, the culture of the camp and how we as individuals and camps affect the city We are talking about all camps and types of camps – theme camps, villages, outdoor camps, walk-in camps, mutant vehicle camps, art support camps, departmental camps, staff camps and work support camps.

For example, one of the main cultural ideas we hear is about plug and play or convenience camping Shares the vision of wanting to stay on the topic in the future In the next phase of the project, an implementation group will focus on this issue to determine the right approach and confirm the standards we use to evaluate camps in light of this vision. Implementation alone in the Burning Man organization will not make the vision a reality It will take all of us individually and collectively to make it happen We hope that you will actively lead the culture of this city that we all love so much, so that it positively evolves and continues into the future.

The feedback we received on this vision statement points to the 10 principles that we, individually and collectively, call our community. Today, 10 principles guide the Burning Man ethos, and this vision complements them.
