Circus of Mirabilia by Elizabeth McConnell My rating for this story is based on how much it made me sad. The report is well written but it is very bad for me. Too much death, human and animal, dust, blood, taboo, the feeling of being immersed in the darkness of this world, was too much to bear. Nineteen-year-old Neil had marks, big and small, covering his body. The poor village people run away or laugh at him. She doesn’t want herself from Elizabeth McConnell’s My Amazing Circus drunken chat. My rating of this story is based on how sad it made me. The report is well written but it is very bad for me. Nineteen-year-old Neil had marks, big and small, covering his body. The poor village people run away or laugh at him. He gets no love from his cheating drunken father and his mother is long dead. His beloved brother Charlie is the only person who cares about Neil. But Charlie is married and Neil hates that he has no future, just a life as a helper at Charlie’s house. Then Nigel’s father sold him to the circus. Nell is estranged from everything she has ever known and her brother Charlie. But Jasper, the owner of the circus, makes her the queen of the moon and stars, the star of his show, and Nellus finally realizes that she belongs. He loves his fellow soldiers, although he hates Jasper and his cruel behavior. She also falls in love with Tobias, Jasper’s quiet, meek and broken brother. We see the actors, the circus, become a real home for them, and other actors become a family that most of them never had. But we also see a horrific war scene through Jasper and Toby’s memory. As life is worthless in wars, so it seems that the inhabitants of the Nile are worthless in the world. There is light at the end of the tunnel for some characters, but I don’t see how they went from a miserable life to a happy ending. In this well-researched novel, McConnell tells his story in a powerfully gripping way, immersing the reader in the Victorian era, and none more so than his magnetic, memorable, memorable and impeccably genuine character, Neal. The development of his character is a joy to see, despite the challenges and obstacles that are presented to him, seen too clearly by others, even with all his projects and goals, since they are invisible, struggling to see what it is. The author takes the reader beyond the creepy toys of the horror circus to a wonderful imagined world about the fate and wonder of people and their lives. This book is uncomfortable and unsettling at times, but it easily drew me in with its beautiful prose and emotional sensitivity, a historical novel of survival, hope, power, and acceptance in such a cruel world.
