(wow) Words Of Wonders Level 1881 Answers – My Aunt Carol (Roberts) Fisher recently honored me with the gift of being the next custodian of the Walsh-Roberts Family Bible, which has been in our family since 1884. The Bible has stood the test of time, but is still amazing . , and it must have been amazing in the new era. Its sheer size—nearly four inches tall—and its weight caused the cover to unroll. The cover has been removed, but none of the pages are loose. I would like to return it with the front and back caps intact for you to enjoy for the next 140 years.

The inscription on the leaf reads: “Martha A. Walsh, her book, St. Catharines, March 24, 1884.’ I don’t know the possible date values. Martha Agnes (Dodds) Walsh (or Walsh) was born on March 11, 1859, so the Bible may have been a slightly belated 25th birthday present. Martha was a young mother of three little girls when she was given this Bible. : Marion b.-5, Clara Ellen, aged 3.5 years, Catherine Elizabeth, aged 7 months (my eldest – Sabatha).

Bible includes detailed introduction page with gold leaf stamp: “Given to Martha Agnes Walsh by Robert Dodds, March 1884. Robert Dodds was Martha’s father, born in England in 1817, and my great-grandfather.” Before his death in 1906, Wearmouth (Elgin County), Ontario, St. He lived in Katerines. herself, but I doubt it, for reasons I’ll discuss shortly.

Census records list Robert as a Methodist in 1861 and 1881 and a member of the Church of England in 1871, 1891 and 1901. Martha’s husband, Henry Walsh, was a Roman Catholic, but apparently not religious. Martha raised her children in the Episcopal faith. So it is not surprising that Robert chose this translation of the Bible to give to Martha, as it included the King James Version of the New Testament along with the Revised Version.

The revised edition of the New Testament was first published in 1881, while the Old Testament and the Apocrypha were not published until 1885 and 1894, respectively.

The Bible also includes charming and useful Bible study aids, such as maps, parables, lists of miracles, and tables for measuring weights, lengths, and coins. “Family table and Zika marriage ban together”, “Complete list of Jewish High Priests”, “Famous rivers and lakes”, etc.

Also included is a summary of major events in world history since 98 AD. to 1882 by William Brown, DDD. I suspect it is the same as William Brown, D.D.D. (1766-1835) wrote

The Bible has had several additions between its pages over the years, such as this poplar leaf (?).

I wonder if there was any special significance there. Who put it there? Martha, or one of the subsequent owners of the Bible? Was it just a beautiful autumn leaf, faded and pressed between the pages of the Bible, or was it significant to the beloved tree? kind of like martha? Did the leaf slip into the Bible by accident or was it intentionally placed at the beginning of the New Testament?

Of course, an essential part of any old family Bible is a well-annotated collection of family births, marriages, and deaths from a genealogist’s perspective, and this Bible does not disappoint. The only record of the marriage between Martha Agnes Dodds and Henry Walsh is in a loose parchment Bible.

] and Martha Agnes Dodds on 22 Nov 1877 in Niagara Suspension Bridge, New York, by Jos. L. Bennett, minister. The two names listed to his left are witnesses, Mary L. Dyer and Jacob A. Gutbrodt. This certificate will be discussed in depth in a future blog post.

In addition to the marriage certificate preserved in the pages of the Bible, the record of Martha’s marriage is also recorded in the book of honor.

The handwriting on this page, especially the inscriptions “Walsh” and “Dodds”, appears to be the same as the handwriting on the opening page of the Bible, leading us to suspect that these two pages were written by Martha. Not her father, Robert Dodds. And something interesting. Note that Henry’s name is spelled “Walsh” here, not “Walsh” on the certificate. The wedding venue was given as Niagara Falls, not the first. “Suspension Bridge, New York” sign.

The marriage certificate of Martha’s daughter Catherine Walsh to John Frank Roberts (spelled as Frank John) is also preserved in the pages of the Bible.

According to this certificate, Frank John Roberts and Catherine (Kather) Walsh of Buffalo, New York were married by Albert L. Grann, pastor of the Pilgrim Church, June 10, 1903. Marriage witnesses were Frances Hurst and Edward Dursham. This may be the only record of the marriage. I enrolled at Pilgrim Congregational Church (now known as Pilgrim-St. Luke’s United Church of Christ).

In September 2020, they checked to see if they had a copy of the marriage record and there was no such history, “maybe we had it in the file that we lost in an electrical fire. It was there for years.”

We do not have a wedding photo of John Frank Roberts and Catherine Walsh, but we do have one taken at the same time.

In addition to the two free marriage certificates preserved in the Bible, the Bible contained pages of births, marriages, deaths, and memorials.

Although the birth dates of all ten of Martha’s children were recorded, the same ink used in each entry suggests that they were all recorded at the same time, rather than recording each child separately at birth. Henry and Martha’s birth dates complete the list. I especially like the unusual spelling of the name Catherine Walsh used by her mother, “Catherine”, which would not be out of place in our modern day. Although Henry and Martha Walsh and their four older children were born in St. Catharines, in 1887 the family moved to Buffalo, New York, where all the younger children were born, beginning with Agnes.

The deaths recorded in the Bible appear to have filled the time of each event, as evidenced by various manuscripts and inks. After Martha Walsh’s death in 1935, the Bible passed into the hands of her daughter Catherine (Walsh) Roberts. . Last time, in 1960, Clara B. (Walsh) was the death of Ulrich.

The ink and writing are identical, so the first two marriages appear to be recorded at the same time as the birth. I am intrigued by the thought that the names of the grooms may have been included in another manuscript made after the original.

The Bible also has memos that include entries about the Pan American Exposition and world events that Martha or Catherine thought were important.
