A century later, in November 2013, thousands of Ukrainian citizens gathered in Kiev’s Independence Square to protest that then-President Yanukovych had not signed a referendum with the European Union, opting instead for a closer alliance with President Vladimir Putin and Russia. Peaceful protests turned violent after military police opened fire on the crowd, killing more than a hundred civilians.
It follows four people through an unstable Ukrainian winter as the Euromaidan protests change their lives forever. Katya is a Ukrainian-American doctor who works at the temporary medical clinic at St. Michael’s Monastery; Misha is an engineer from Pripyat who has been living in Kiev since the death of his wife; Slava is a passionate young entrepreneur whose past hardships have strengthened her resolve in the face of bullying; and ex-KGB agent Aleksandr Ivanovich climbs atop a burning police van and plays the piano in Independence Square.
As the lives of Katya, Misha, Slava and Alexander intertwine, each seeks solace in a particularly turbulent and violent time. The story is told by a chorus of voices that also includes folklore and recounts the tumultuous history of the Slavs.
