So I ran a series of tests on a virtual machine running macOS 13.1 Viable on my Mac Studio M1 Max to find out what might explain the reported sightings and whether it supports the claim.
Or any other component involved in image parsing or neural hash generation was working, when I browsed through the images in the Finder window gallery, I loaded 18 different images in different formats to ~/Documents on my VM, opened the gallery view of the . at them, and looked at them for a minute. I took all the registry entries at that time, more than 40,000 in total, and saved that text to a file using Ulbow. Not only was there no evidence that any image analysis had been performed, but there were no log entries at the time.

Although I studied VLU and Live Text in detail in Monterey, before continuing I wanted to make sure that they behave the same way on macOS 13.1 and write the same sequence of messages to the log. So I got the log text using Mints for a VLU image using Preview. This confirmed that the messages and processes were very similar to those that I had previously analyzed. This is summarized in the following diagram.
It does not connect to Apple’s servers until later in the process of matching the neural hashes generated by the above image analysis. Feedback from these servers makes it easy to view the VLU results in the window over the image.
While the original definition was ‘browsing Finder’, for others it may mean viewing images as QuickLook previews by selecting an image and clicking the location bar. In my previous review of VLU and Live Text, this was not something I was looking for. I got the log extracts of the two images open in QuickLook Preview. One of the images had handwritten text, the other did not.
For both images, VisionKit started image analysis when the image was opened in the preview window. For an image containing no text, this completed in a total processing time of 615 ms, no text could be retrieved from the image, and no remote connection was attempted. The image containing the text took a long time, 881 ms, and returned a text 65 ‘DD’ long (as shown in the log) after a wide range of processes, including Outbound Secure TCP or Quic Connection.
