London and Paris are two of the most visited cities in Europe; Two of the most visited cities in the world, indeed! The good news is that you can visit them both on an amazing trip to Europe.

If you’re looking to plan a bucket list trip to Europe that doesn’t require a ton of time to travel (or a ton of time off work), trips to London and Paris are great options. The two cities are not that far apart, but they are very different in terms of history, culture and overall vibe.
You could certainly spend weeks or months in London or Paris and see/not see everything. But if you have limited time, you can pack all the highlights into a 10-day trip.
My husband Elliott and I did this earlier this year and now I will definitely share all the details with you!
After spending extra months in London and a double trip to Paris, this tour covers the best of both cities! That packs a lot into 10 days, but what can I say? I tend to be an “all-everything” kind of traveler. If you are not, feel free to tailor this tour to suit you.

I recommend booking a multi-city flight where you fly to London and return home from Paris, it will help you maximize your time. (You can reverse this and fly to Paris and home from London, but my husband preferred to fly to Paris a second time from London, where he was used to.)
If you are traveling to London from North America, you will arrive in the morning. So if you’re like me and have trouble sleeping on the plane I wouldn’t recommend packing much today.
(However, I recommend that you try to avoid oversleeping today, as it will help you adjust to the rapidly changing time!)

Once you arrive, you will need to drop off your bags at your hotel. You won’t be able to check in yet, but almost all hotels will store your luggage for you until your room is ready. (More on hotel tips later.)
Pro Tip: You have several options from Heathrow Airport to Central London. If you’re on a budget, you can take the Picadilly Line (Tube) directly from Heathrow. Or you can opt for the new Elizabeth Line, which now takes you to Paddington Station, where you can transfer to other tube lines or catch a taxi outside. The Heathrow Express also runs non-stop from Heathrow to Paddington. Note that I do not take a taxi from Heathrow. Allow at least 2.5 hours upon landing to clear immigration and enter the city.
Then you can head to the nearest tube station and head to Westminster to start your first day of exploring London! (Located on Westminster Circle, District and Jubilee Tube lines.)
London has a good public transport system, the most popular being the Tube or Underground, which consists of 11 underground railway lines connecting all corners of London. London also has buses (red double-decker), overground trains and taxi/hailing stations.

Previously, the best way to use the tube was to buy an Oyster card to pay as you go (at a London station or before your journey), which you could top up and use as you wished. On all public transport. But now the Tube has gone contactless and most of its locations accept contactless card payments and Apple Pay/Google Pay.
To help get around, apps like Citymapper are great for public transport (and probably more people use than Google Maps), and when I want to tackle the full London Tube map I use my AllSubway app. (Both apps can be used offline.) TFL also has a dedicated app for Oyster cards / contactless payments.
If you are arriving at Westminster station, I always recommend exit 4 (the Bridge Street exit). You’ll climb the stairs and exit at street level to see the Elizabeth Tower (which houses the bell known as Big Ben) above you. It definitely has the wow factor!
Although the view is impressive, it is not the best for taking photos of the palace. To do so, turn to your right towards Parliament Square Park, which offers a better view of Parliament and Westminster Abbey.

If you want that Insta-famous photo of Big Ben in the background in front of the red phone, these phone houses are located on Greater George Street near Parliament Park.
From here it’s time to head to Westminster Abbey, the Gothic cathedral where kings and queens have been crowned (and sometimes buried) since 1066. Because it is amazing and full of history inside and out.
Booking tickets to Westminster Abbey is highly recommended (book a ticket here), and it’s always a good idea to go early (perfect since you’re arriving early today!). Allow at least 1.5 hours to see everything inside.
Stay on the road next to Parliament as you cross, and take the stairs on the right as you cross. Here’s a path along the Thames (Queen’s Walk) that offers my favorite view of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

After taking photos, you can follow the tunnel under the bridge to one of my favorite places in London, the South Bank.
Depending on the time, you might want to grab a meal now, or you might want to squeeze in a trip to the London Eye. The London Eye is one of the largest observation wheels in the world, and you can’t miss looking at the sky from this part of London.
Rides on the London Eye take place in large rotating pods (each holding up to 25 people) and take half an hour. It’s not something I have to do in London, but it is for many others! If it’s on your London bucket list, I highly recommend booking Fast Track tickets in advance to avoid long queues.
Then walk along the right bank. If you haven’t eaten yet, there are a variety of pubs and pop-up cafes to choose from, especially in the summer months.

If you’re up for it, I recommend the Queen’s Walk, about a kilometer (20-25 minutes) to the Millennium Bridge. You’ll pass a lot on the way, including the sea! When you arrive at the Millennium Bridge, you have several options depending on how you feel*.
*If you’ve arrived in London today, you can spend a lot of time exploring the South Bank and perhaps visiting an attraction or two. If not, I’d recommend crossing the bridge and getting back on the tube at Blackfriars (Central/District Lines) or St Petersburg.
If you’re in the mood for a museum, the Tate Modern is nearby and free to visit (and has great views of the skyline from its rooftop observation deck). Shakespeare’s Globe Theater is also nearby, with an attached restaurant/pub called The Swan.
The Swan has really nice Shakespearean themed and affordable afternoon teas (although I recommend more afternoon teas later in the tour).

Finally, when you’re ready you’ll want to cross the Thames over the super cool Millennium Bridge, which will take you to St. Petersburg. Paul’s Cathedral offers.
If you visit the second most famous church in London, it is St. It’s impressive even from the outside, but it’s worth a trip inside if you’re so inclined. (Note that it’s only open till 4.30pm, with last entry at 4pm) You can find St. Pre-order Paul’s tickets here.
By now you’ve had a full first day in London, it’s time to head back to the hotel, have dinner and a good night’s sleep to get ready for the rest of your trip!
