A new species of lichen has been discovered in the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador, according to a recent paper published in

. The researchers, led by lead author Mikaela Schmuhl, identified lichen tryptamine and psilocybin as possible compounds, among other potential substances.
The story is quite unusual. Only one specimen of lichen is known to all Western science, and it was collected in 1981 by ethnobotanists Wade Davis and Jim Yost during research in Ecuador. In a 1983 paper describing their discovery of this lichen, Davis and Yost wrote:
In the spring of 1981, while conducting ethnobotanical research in eastern Ecuador, our attention was drawn to the most unusual use of hallucinogens by the Waoran, a small isolated group of about 600 Indians. … Among most Amazonian tribes, hallucinogenic intoxication is seen as a collective journey into the subconscious, and as such is an inherently social event. However, Vaoran considers the use of hallucinogens to be an aggressively antisocial act; So the shaman, or Ido, who wants to cause a curse, takes the drug alone or only accompanied by his wife at night, in the secret of the forest or in a secluded house. … Of special botanical interest is the fact that this peculiar cultural practice involves hallucinogenic plants, one of which is rarely used and one of which has not been previously reported. Vaoran has two hallucinogens: Banisteriopsisniun muricata and an as yet undescribed basidiolichen of the genus Dictionema. The former is morphologically very similar to other commonly used species such as ayahuasca, Banisieriopsis Caapi… On the other hand, the use of basidiolichenes as a hallucinogen has not yet been reported. In this paper, Davis and Yost described the new species of lichen as “extremely rare.” In fact, it’s so rare that Yost “heard reports of it more than seven years before he encountered it in the woods.” Imagine you’re a researcher, devoting your life to studying the people and plants of remote regions, and finally discover the elusive psychedelic lichen you’ve been hearing about for seven years.

Shmulil’s team analyzed the lichen extract using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) techniques and tryptamine, psilocybin, and 5-MeO. -DMT identified, as well as 5-methoxytryptamine (5-MeOT), 5-MeO-NMT and 5-methoxytryptamine (5-MT).
It is important to note that without reference compounds – in other words, available samples of the chemicals in question – these results are suggestive, not definitive. Since compounds such as 5-MeO-DMT have never been observed in mushrooms or lichens, it is unlikely that all these identifications are correct. And while mushrooms are known for producing psilocybin, the family to which this fungal lichen belongs is –

– There are no other known species that produce psilocybin. Of all the compounds mentioned, the researchers suggest that their identification of tryptamine and psilocybin is the most accurate.
