We decided to start at the White River Campground, northeast of Rainier, because it gave us a good place to sleep the night before starting the trip and it provided a safe place to leave the rental car for the trip. With the White River as our starting point, traveling together gave us a few days to get our luggage under us at the start of the trip. It also saved the difficult climb through the snowy Panhandle Gap towards the end of our trip when we were in our good and reliable backpacking form.
Most people walk, so walking has some benefits. Often, it feels like we have the park to ourselves. Most of the people we met along the way had gone somewhere else, so the encounters were pleasant and short, but often involved exchanging valuable information. As for our first time on the trail, we liked the news we heard in the “Trail Telegraph” about what we would encounter as the miles rolled by. We twice passed people we had met on the road the day before. It’s great to connect with people who know about this journey and share experiences.

Take your time and do it slowly. As mentioned earlier, the Wonderland Trail is a huge undertaking, so be aware of your physical abilities when deciding how many miles you can afford. The Park Service recommends allowing 10 to 14 days to complete the entire trail, and there are backcountry campsites scattered along the trail that allow for different routes.
We hiked in 12 days, averaging 8 miles/day, but most of the people we met were doing less walking. The longest was 8 days, but we met a few people who completed the walk in 5 and two runners who ran in 3 days! We can’t imagine what these monsters will see on the road. Apply for a permit between March 15 and March 31 Well, we apologize for not giving you more notice here, but you need to get it soon. A backcountry permit is required for camping on the Wonderland Trail. Download a copy of the park’s Wilderness Trip Planner to help you plan your trip. Then complete the permit order online and indicate which campsites you want to stay at each night along the way. Submit your application to the Park Service Center anytime between March 15-31 to participate in the Advance Online Permit Lottery.
NB: This is the only way to request permission before doing the Wonderland Trail. The park does not accept special requests by mail, fax, telephone, or any other unusual method you may use to process your request. This is a new feature of the park after the big fire in 2016. It caused a lot of problems last summer without prior permission and many hikers. (including us!). Appearing at the park gates in hopes of getting permission to travel.
Everything is not bad. The snafu prompted the Park Service to develop better systems to handle the large number of permits they receive each year, and 2017 will be the first year to test the new system. Only one request is allowed at Wonderland per ride, so remember. play nice if your application is rejected outright.
If you do not arrive by March 31, you can apply for a certificate online. All requests received after April 1 will be processed in the order received. Beginning April 1, park officials will begin withdrawing applications from the lottery and try to issue as many contracts as possible. It doesn’t seem like a very good thing, but we’re here to tell you that the trip works. We have our hearts set on the Wonderland Trail Trek and in the end we have at least 10-11 days to complete regardless of where we start or where we go. We decided to take our chances, fly to Washington State and change as much as we can to spend two weeks traveling or return to another place if we don’t get permission.
We visited the Wilderness Information Center (WIC) in Longmire, southwest of the park, to apply for our own permits. We decided to arrive early in the morning and went inside.
